Innovative technology for teaching

UNI SIM’s haptic and VR simulators are designed to revolutionise medical and dental education. The technology includes VR headsets that immerse students in a clinical setting and haptic feedback systems that simulate the tactile sensation of medical procedures. This Portsmouth technology allows students to practice in a safe environment. Which, improves their skills and confidence while reducing the use of single-use plastics in training.

James Markey, Founder of UNI SIM said:

“Since starting UNI SIM, we’ve grown rapidly, reaching clients as far away as Spain, Chile, and Japan, as well as more locally to Portsmouth Dental Academy, Newcastle University and the NHS. “

Leadership and vision

James Markey used his background in haptics and VR to create affordable and portable training solutions. His vision was to use Portsmouth technology to revolutionise medical and dental training for the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Growth and expansion

Founded just before the COVID-19 pandemic, UNI SIM’s first international clients included ADEMA University in Mallorca. The technology proved invaluable during the pandemic by eliminating aerosols and water spray. This resulted in making training safer. Since then, UNI SIM has expanded its reach, exporting to more places. Some examples are Chile, Japan, and serving institutions like Portsmouth Dental Academy and Newcastle University.

James added:

“Portsmouth is incredibly business positive and the transport links, including the ferries, have played a big role in our success too. Local funding grants and training opportunities have been the icing on the cake.”

“We’re really looking to really change education in universities and supercharge the training methods for the 21st century. To do that we’ve released the new version of our portable training simulator that allows training to be done just about anywhere there’s an electrical plug and we can’t wait to see how far it takes us!”

Partnership with Portsmouth Dental Academy

The Portsmouth Dental Academy offers courses in Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy, and Dental Nursing, integrating UNI SIM’s simulators to enhance their teaching resources. These medical and dental simulations provide a balance of technology, portability, and affordability. This means students can practice treatments as if on real patients, without the associated risks.
